"I am constantly challenged
by light; it encompasses so
many things in my work from atmosphere to form,
to mood and so on. Maybe it is because it can be so fleeting at
times that light keeps me excited as I set out my easel and paints in the
anticipation of capturing the moment. Of
course, being out in nature means I am seeing
everything firsthand rather than from
memory, and that keeps my work honest. That is to
say, I am not bound by any
formulas or pre-conceived ideas that can easily creep into an
artist's work. As Turner once said, 'Paint what
you see, not what you know.'
Recently, I have noticed
that some of my work has moved
away from the "pure or pristine landscape," although I
still paint these scenes, and still enjoy doing so.
While I have been drawn more and more to
cities and towns in addition to
rural areas, light is still the dominating factor. All
this has happened unconsciously and gradually. I attribute
this to my interest in life-drawing. This has led me to the conclusion
that I would like to bring the figure back into my paintings. Now
I still try to capture the light, but
in addition I include the overall "hustle and bustle" of
the streets the people, the cars all of
which seem to add to the excitement.
It is always a pleasure
to meet people when I'm painting.
I feel very privileged to be an artist and hope I can share my
enthusiasm for painting with others. I hope this
will always be so and that you will say
hello wherever you happen to see me painting."
